A downloadable blender add-on

Have you tried using Mixamo animations, but find that they always end up clipping with the arms, or did you wish you add a bit of personality to a generic animation and better suit your character's identity? Are you simply unable to upload your model onto Mixamo? Or have you tried using other animations through retargeting, but it doesn't look quite right?

With (VRM) Spacing Animation Baking, you can fix the animations and give your projects a more professional, less amateurish look!

VRM Spacing Animation Baking is a small suite of animation tools for Blender, primarily designed to help animate VRM models for game engine, in particular for those lacking engine features like real-time physics. It was originally designed with RPG Developer Bakin in mind, but it's usable for any game engine or even for general animation. There are three core aspects to the add-on:

  • Spacing
  • Animation
  • Baking

Spacing

BeforeUsing the add-on

Spacing refers to the features that can adjust the posture of the model throughout the entire animation, without having to learn all the ins and outs of Blender's animation tools.

Using the Track & Apply Pose Changes feature, you can easily record the posture differences by translating, rotating, and scaling the bones in Pose Mode, and when satisfied, can apply the adjustments to the entire selection of key frames! This is ideal for simple animations that aren't too dynamic and to quickly adjust un-even, non-symmetrical posture. In theory, this can even work with non-VRM models, but I did not test it out.

For more precise control, you can use the old system of selecting bone pairs from a drop-down list and adjust the posture symmetrically through there.

Animation

BeforeBaking & making the physics loopable
⚠️ This feature will only work with VRM 1.0 models.

For game engines that lack (or previously lacked) any sort of real-time physics, or if you're looking to optimize your game to the absolute extreme, VRM Spacing Animation Baking offers a few buttons to select/delete keyframes of all VRoid physics bones from the timeline, a quick toggle to enable/disable VRM physics on the Blender VRM add-on, and quickly bake the animation with the hair physics.

Lastly, there is a Loopify feature, to quickly make hair physics loop seamlessly, with some adjustments you can make to better suit more extreme cases.

Baking

The whole add-on bakes animations.

Usage Guide

Track & Apply Pose

  • Have your (VRM) model in Blender loaded with an animation.
  • Select all bones in the 3D space by pressing the A key while the mouse is hovering over the 3D view.
  • With your mouse hovering over the timeline, you can either press A to select all the keyframes or drag a rectangle to select a range of frames to edit.
  • Open the add-on panel by pressing the N key and select VRM Space Anime Baking.
  • Click on "Start Tracking".
  • Any bone transformation (rotation, translation, and scaling) in Pose Mode will be recorded: pose the current armature without scrubbing through the timeline to your liking.
  • Press "Apply Changes".
